    Multiplication using Bead Bars

The activity of multiplication using bead bars was conducted for Montessori Seniors as a hands on activity in learning multiplication using concrete materials like the Montessori Colour Bead Bars. The bead bars are made of coloured beads on a wire, in quantities of one to ten. Each bead bar quantity is a different colour which helps support easy recognition of the amount represented by the beads.

Prepared chits were placed upside down, for example, 4*6. Each child picked up a chit and called out what was written on it. The child had to read it as ‘4 taken 6 times’. The child picked bead bar of 4, 6 times and arranged them one below the other. The child counted the number of beads and answered as 4 taken 6 times are 24. This activity will assist the child in strengthening basic multiplication facts, which are essential in higher mathematics.
