A Pound of Flesh
In a spectacular maiden initiative, NPS International, Mysore hosted its first-ever musical theatre production, “A Pound of Flesh” on 30 August. This adaptation of William Shakespeare’s timeless classic, The Merchant of Venice, was admirably brought to life on stage. After weeks of meticulous planning and rigorous practice, the young performers delivered a spellbinding show that left the audience awestruck.
The students stole the show with their remarkable acting prowess, expressive dialogue delivery, and captivating stage presence. The beautifully crafted costumes, perfectly suited to the Elizabethan era, added vibrancy and authenticity to the performance. The elaborate stage setting, complete with stunning backdrops and lighting, transported the audience to 16th century Venice. The highlight of the programme was that every aspect of the production — from the script, costumes, stage setting, and backdrops to the lyrics and music — was thoughtfully planned and skillfully executed by the students themselves, showcasing their creativity and ownership of the event.
Parents and guests were full of praise, lauding the students’ hard work and talent. Through this experience, the children discovered and honed their theatrical and musical skills and learnt important life skills such as collaboration, discipline, time management, and perseverance. It gave them a deeperappreciation for literature and the performing arts, while boosting their confidence to perform before a large audience.
Adding to the excitement was a lively fair, Venetian Delight, organized by students of Classes 9, 10, and 11. The fair featured a variety of stalls offering delicious eatables, fun games, and creative handmade products. It drew enthusiastic participation from parents and guests, creating a festive atmosphere. The proceeds from the sales will be donated to charity, reflecting the school’s commitment to community service and social responsibility.
The evening stood as a testament to the power of teamwork, creativity, and dedication. This first-of-its-kind initiative by NPSI Mysore celebrated Shakespeare’s masterpiece and provided students with a memorable platform to showcase their artistic abilities, setting the stage for many more such productions in the future
