HARVARD MODEL UNITED NATIONS
The eighth session of Harvard Model United Nations was held at Hyderabad between the 12 th and 15th of August 2018.For the first time, a team of six students from NPS International Mysore had the opportunity to attend this mega conference, where over 1500 student delegates from around the world gathered to discuss and debate upon the most pressing issues of the era. The team-Nageshwar, Janak Sunil, Siri, Chandni, Shashank from class 10 and Deepak Narayan as the head delegate from class 11, accompanied by a faculty member, truly made use of this opportunity to sharpen their oratory and debating skills. The students were chosen to represent Srilanka, Monaco and Senegal in the committees of LEGAL, IOM, SPECPOL, DISEC, SOCHUM and UNDP.
Throughout the committee rooms and hallways of the Hyderabad International Convention Centre, participants were challenged to turn their research into practical solutions, keeping in mind the complexity of problems ranging from global security and international borders to climate change and human rights. All delegates had to collaborate and navigate their committees, both contemporary and historical.
Through this year's theme 'Act to Impact' , students learned and developed skills to tackle realistic issues during the resolution process. The participants were encouraged to inspire action beyond committee rooms, foster friendships, cultivate ideas and be passionate about making a positive impact in the world. The committees taught delegates to embrace diplomacy and think outside-the –box, enabling them to learn about creating their own meaningful change. All delegates realised that they truly had the potential to 'Act to Impact' to build a better global community.
The conference sessions, spread over 80 hours and 4 days, saw delegates working together to tackle complex international issues and craft political, economic and social solutions for the future. They met new friends, learnt leadership skills, and gained the confidence to bring about a change in their respective communities. The students embraced challenges of finding solutions and reaching consensus, and engaged with the ideas of other delegates around them. This conference opportunity was a stepping-stone to pursue what the delegates were passionate about.
Apart from serious conferences, the sessions were made fun filled and interactive through leadership forums where speakers from leading universities and the corporate world engaged with the students on global issues that called for immediate action. Special cuisines and delegate dance sessions made the entire conference a total learning with fun experience. The team from NPS Mysore returned home, enriched in knowledge and encouraged to orient their peers to the nitty gritties of MUN , and grateful to the school and their parents for making HMUN a reality for them.

RV College Parliamentary Debate Competition
RV College Parliamentary Debate Competition
It's never been more relevant to encourage the generation of tomorrow to question that which is going on around them. Parliamentary debating provides young adults with the skills to successfully tackle the world around them and intelligently question the validity of statements. In a world where we need to challenge opinions and create change for the good, young learners blossom into effective leaders through debates.
23 June, 2018 was a day to remember for it was the day our students represented NPS International Mysore at RV College, Bangalore in an interschool parliamentary debating competition. All the six students who participated, were debutants when it came to parliamentary debating. Each of them felt the intensity of competitive vibes as they walked in.
Our students donned the role of various Government Heads as they intensely discussed and debated on current issues like "This House regrets the existence of Identity Museums", "This House regrets the narrative of the American Dream", "This House will ban Plea Bargain", "This House regrets Cause Marketing" ...
Being allotted just half an hour to prepare, the young learners were ready with their arguments and points. The students put their best foot forward, actively participated and voiced out their opinions with sheer confidence This competition helped them develop a keen eye for detail, a mind for critical analysis and reasoning, the language for public speaking and a skill for negotiating with diplomacy, that backs it all. They also learnt that debating is not arguing. but a diplomatic presentation of facts and opinions coupled with healthy discussion of current affairs without personal attacks.
The competition was a winning experience in the sense that students realized the value of participating in events. This matters most because exposure to such oratory competitions builds confidence, zeal and enthusiasm towards shaping them into better personalities.
