Out in the Plant Nursery
In order to demonstrate to the students of Class V the benefits underlying vegetative propagation, they were taken on an outdoor visit to Sampath Plant Nursery on 2nd November 2017. The proprietor of the nursery Mr Narayan gave an extensive talk highlighting the various aspects of vegetative propagation. The talk was supplemented with numerous demonstrations showing the process of grafting, stem cutting, ground layering, air layering etc. The students got the hands-on information about various aspects of vegetative propagation. They made good use of the opportunity by interacting with the speaker and got their queries clarified. The trip provided a perfect scope for effective learning. Students enjoyed the trip.
An Insightful and Delightful Educational Trip of Class VI
Class VI students were taken for an educational field trip to 'Science Ashram' on 29 August 2017. It provided an opportunity to the young learners to participate in experiment based learning of certain scientific concepts.
A video on 'Human Creativity' was played for all the students to understand that humans have a very unique ability to think out of the box and they learn more by working hands-on as compared to listening or reading. The students were given the materials for making a model and with the help of a step by step video they created the model displaying the optical illusion which is based on the working of the multiple images when two mirrors are kept parallel. The students were totally engrossed in the activity and displayed an eagerness to learn ‘what’ and ‘how' of the concept explained.
The response of the students was very positive and they thoroughly enjoyed their trip.
At the end of the session, the students thanked the instructors and presented a thank you card to them.
A Field Trip to Science Ashram, Mysore
Students of class VII were taken on a field trip to Science Ashram, a place where children are able to showcase their talents by making science models. It was an innovative workshop, where students were asked to assemble the parts of an anemometer which was given in a kit with an audio and visual help.
The kit contained materials like plastic holders, stickers, a large piece of soft board, screws and nuts, plastic hemispherical cups and a metal holder. The students with the help of the teachers started the model with great enthusiasm. They were very excited to use the tools such as the C clamp, hacksaw blade, drill machine and the glue gun. It was a pleasure to watch them getting completely involved doing the hands on activity and helping each other to complete the model.
Students clarified their doubts and learnt the practical applications of the anemometer. They learnt that it was a device used to measure the speed of the wind. It was a mesmerizing learning experience which will be cherished by students and the teachers alike, forever. A learning which will last a lifetime!
The Chemistry of Plastics
The students of XII A stepped into Shree Plastic Industry in Bannimantap to be greeted by the distinct smell of plastic. On the floor were neatly stacked gunny bags that packed some of the 150 different products that this industry manufactured. They were guided to a room whose area was dominated by a huge machine that bore the mould of a carton box. They watched as a worker scraped off the extra plastic from the freshly made boxes. Mr. Sandeep explained to them with great detail the various processes to which both machines and human labour must contribute to make a good quality product. He informed them with a live demonstration the creation of a mixture to which the desired pigmenting substance is added in order to obtain different colors of plastic. He also told them about how the injection step remains the same regardless the size of the machine and the mould. He spoke about how multicoloured plastics are created. The place was filled with buckets, carton boxes and handles of different hues. There were different polymers which are also a part of their curriculum at school. High Density Polythene, Low Density Polythene, Polypropene were all lined up ready for use. Mr Sandeep spoke about the various players in the Plastic industry and how he must keep up with the changing market trends. He talked about his corporate social responsibility and how this industry is bread and butter for many. He concluded by saying that running a business was not a one-man show. They got back into their bus and journeyed back to their school with knowledge enriched and their minds enlightened by the Chemistry of Plastics.
Grade 10 'A' - Journey of Printing
As part of history lesson- Print Culture and the Modern World a field trip was planned to newspaper printing press. Before taking them to the printing press students were taught about history of printing. A printing press is a device for applying pressure to an inked surface resting upon a print medium (such as paper or cloth), thereby transferring the ink. Typically used for texts, the invention of the printing press is widely regarded as one of the most influential events in the second millennium, ushering in the period of modernity. The printing press was invented in the Holy Roman Empire by Johannes Gutenberg, around 1440. Gutenberg, a goldsmith by profession, devised a hand mould to create metal movable type, and adapted screw presses and other existing technologies, to create a printing system. Today (24/8/15) we had been to office of the Star of Mysore to see the process of printing of news paper. Students of Grade 10 had firsthand experience of stages of printing. They witnessed the pre-printing department like advertisement, gathering of news, editing, preparing of printing plate for printing and the process of printing from the feeding of plate to the newspaper. Students were very enthusiastic about seeing the transformation of words from ideas to newspaper.
