A Visit to the Post Office

Field trips are planned to give a practical experience to students and enhance their knowledge. Montessori Seniors and KG II students were excited to visit the post office. As they reached their destination, students divided were divided into two groups. They were greeted with a million dollar smile by one of the officials. She introduced them to the postmasters, who explained in detail about the duties and responsibilities of personal at the post office.

Our guide showed them different kinds of stamps and also told them about the newly released stamps. Students were eager to know the names of stamps, the name of the person on the stamp and the cost of each stamp. They were delighted to identify parrots, peacocks and national symbols on the stamp. Our little learners were briefed about the purpose of inland letters, envelopes, postcards etc. The students were surprised to hear that a post office also functions like a bank with accounts, etc.

As an activity, students were given postcards a day prior to the field trip and all students wrote letters to their parents on their post cards. At the post office, students were given information about the 'to' and 'from' address and the importance of pin code. Each student posted the letter that they had written, in the post box and all were eager to know when their parents would receive their card.

Students were amazed at the information they gathered and were brimming with enthusiasm. They volunteered to share their experience of visiting a post office. The trip to the post office was fun filled and informative. Today, letter writing has almost lost its significance and this trip helped students to gain a lot of information about the letters and the personal touch it conveys.
