Just a Minute Session
Children of Montessori were very excited to be back to school and they were enthusiastic to share the experiences which they had during their Dassara holidays. Each had something special to share with their peers and at the same time it was heartening to see children applauding and appreciating their friends while they were speaking. Our ever enthusiastic parents had taken immense effort to prepare their child for the JAM activity. It was delightful to see abundant confidence among the children.
Fun with Blends
Blending is a skill of joining individual sounds together to make a word. Blending of different sounds involves the use of phonetic skills. This is important as it helps the students to associate sounds to letters while reading.
Montessori Seniors were shown pictures of different things and asked to name the pictures. After naming, they were asked to listen to the word and analyze the sounds in the word. They were then asked to match the picture according to the blend sound they heard while analyzing. This activity was a recap of blend sounds in a fun learning way.
Shapematic
Colours and shapes are the two very noticeable attributes of the world around us. Children use these two attributes to observe and categorize what they see. Learning the differences between shapes, help students to focus on specific characteristics. Montessori Juniors learnt to use their observational skills to identify the different shapes. They also learnt to compare different shapes and group similar shapes together.
Shapematic activity was planned for the students in order to revisit the concept of geometrical shapes and to apply this concept in matching 3D shapes to their 2D counterparts. Giving students practice with shapes, helped them solidify their understanding of shapes.
Colour Discovery
Colour sorting is a fundamental concept for early learning students. We use colours to describe almost everything around us. Learning colours can be a challenging task for students of early learning.
Colour Discovery activity was arranged for Montessori Beginners to help them differentiate various colours. The concepts of sorting objects of different colours were done by placing objects in a mixed manner. The students sorted the objects according to their colours, by taking turns. This activity gave the students an opportunity to refine their hand and eye coordination. It also helped them with their problem solving skills.
Chinese Whisper
Chinese Whisper is a game played throughout the world. In this activity, one student whispers a message to another and then it is passed through a line of students until the last student announces the message to the entire group.
This activity was planned for Montessori Seniors to teach voice modulation and to speak in low pitch. The activity was initiated to make the students aware that they need to comprehend what is being said and convey the same message to the next person without altering the message. At the end of the each round of the game, they were excited to know the message announced by the last student.
Game of Sounds
Phonetics play a large role in developing reading and writing skills in students. An activity related to phonetics was planned for Montessori Juniors to help them analyze the sounds in succession by recognizing the first and the last sound in a word. Various pictures were shown to the students, and they were asked to recognize the picture and analyze the sounds using sand paper letters material.
Game of Sounds had given pupils an opportunity to recognize the pictures by hearing the sounds in the word by saying the sounds of each letter, and also build words using sand paper letters and reading the word phonetically.
Walking on the Line
Walking on the line activity was planned for Montessori Beginners to nurture concentration and self discipline, develop and encourage large motor skills and to be more independent. The activity consisted of different line formations which were kept ready for students to walk on. The students were made to walk by balancing themselves and move as per the instructions given by teachers.
This activity also provides opportunities to develop and hone their skills ranging from advance motor skills to fine motor skills. It’s not only to develop motor control, but also improves listening skills, balance, coordination, body awareness and sense of inner discipline. Students also widen their visual skills of left and right orientation and visual span.
