Fundamental Measurements
"One accurate measurement is worth thousand expert opinions"
Grade 6 students had an activity in Physics connecting to fundamental measurements. The activity was about measuring the thickness of a coin, finding the diameter of a wire, measuring the length of a curved line, length of curved surface and finding the diameter of a spherical object. The whole class was divided into five groups. Each group was given a task to measure the given things respectively. By these hands on activity of measuring things, learners understood that measurement can be done in various methods but it has to be accurate. The investigative activity helped the learners to sharpen their basic measuring skills.
As Enrico Fermi Says, "There are two possible outcomes: if the result confirms the hypothesis, then you have made a measurement. If the result is contrary to the hypothesis, then you've made a discovery". Each learner in grade six was with a hypothesis which matched the accuracy of measurement. They even realized that for being a scientist we need to be a keen observer!
Collage and Extempore Speaking
The students of class – VI were encouraged to collect pictures of different animals to make a collage and speak about it. All the students were divided into three groups to work on the collage. The students of each group spoke about the domestic and wild animals in Kannada. This activity not only helped the students to think creatively, it also boosted their knowledge about our regional language. Speaking with confidence in front of the audience helped them to sharpen their Kannada language and dialect.
Electricity
Electricity has an important place in modern society. It is a controllable and convenient form of energy for a variety of uses in homes, schools, hospitals, industries and so on. The lesson 'Electricity" from Physics gives an insight of what constitutes electricity? How does it flow in an electric circuit? What are the factors that control or regulate the current through an electric circuit? Resistors play a major role in electric circuits. The current through a conductor depends upon its resistance and the potential difference across its ends. In various electrical gadgets, resistors are used in various combinations. Grade 10 students had an activity on how to apply Ohm's law to combination of resistors. The class was divided into 6 groups. They were asked to assume each member as a connecting wire. To make the class understand the combination of resistors better, they were asked to form a group in such a way that the length of the connecting wire will be maximum. The students grouped themselves into different patterns. Few groups stood in the parallel connection, where in each resistor are connected end to end. Next, the task was to reduce the length but with same number of resistors. The outcome was excellent. Many new patterns were designed by the students. Few groups gave the parallel connection by standing in "Titanic pose". This activity helped the students to understand the connection of resistors in parallel and in series very well. This works as a gateway for them to solve the numerical questions.
The Space on a Chart
The students of class VI created 2 dimensional models of the solar system on a chart. As a group they collected information regarding the different planets, asteroids, comets, and constellations. The students were asked to make the model of the solar system on a particular day. They brought all the required materials for the activity and worked in their groups to create the models. Finally they presented their creation in front of their peer groups. Questions were posed by their fellow classmates and they clarified the doubts. This exercise ignited the minds of young learners towards the space.
Role play on finding the Factors & Multiples, HCF and LCM
An activity was conducted for the students of grade VI in connection with the chapter 'Factors and Multiples.' The chapter was divided into sub topics on- (i) Finding the Factors & Multiples of a given number and (ii) Finding the HCF and LCM of the given numbers. The students were divided into 7 groups to present on the topics given, in the form of a role-play and used working models as a teaching aid.
The students were given a week's time to prepare for the topics and present it in front of the other groups. They were able to understand the concept and identify the prime numbers, factors, multiples, HCF and LCM of the given numbers. The learners enjoyed the activity thoroughly.
My Mom
To instill the desire in learning and to enhance the creative skills, the students of class VI had an activity of composing a poem on 'Mother' in English. The students were divided into groups to collaborate their thoughts in composing a poem. They were encouraged to use the poetic devices as well. This activity enabled them to think creatively and express their emotions through their poem creative piece- 'My Mom'. The learners presented the poem in the class through their rhythm and style. The students were elated when they witnessed their classmates presenting a rap. This indeed was a tribute to their mothers.
Rohan’s Character Sketch
The mind map activity was conducted in class VI. It was regarding one of the character named Rohan in the story ‘Secrets’. After completion of the lesson, various character traits of Rohan were discussed in the class as portrayed in the story. The learners were asked to come up with their opinion about Rohan’s character. They were encouraged to create a colourful, imaginative, beautiful mind map on Rohan’s Character. This activity was conducted to enhance the skill of comprehension, imagination, critical thinking and to improve vocabulary in English language. After completion the students’ creation were displayed on the notice board.
